These are the Next Grips Going on my Clubs

A little over a year ago I came across a putter grip manufactured by a company called Tupper. I was struggling with my putting and had been testing out some over-sized grips to no avail. None were a good fit until I tried the Tupper grip, which was an over-sized but tapered, and extremely comfortable, grip.

Also, prior to this season I had all of my clubs re-gripped with a very well-known grip manufacturer and they turned out to be complete garbage. Granted, I play quite a bit of golf, but not so much that my new grips should already be literally disintegrating in my hands. Looking at them today you would have thought they were installed years ago. So aggravating.

Fast-forward (wait for it) to a few months ago when I learned Tupper, now called Forward Golf (see what I did there?), had gone through a complete product refresh, including the expansion to grips for all clubs.

Based on how much I loved the putter grip, the new grips peaked my interest, to say the least.

However, I wasn’t about to get burned again by a grip that wasn’t built to last. I had just one of the new Forward Golf grips sent to me so I could give it a good once over and field test. I also upgraded my putter grip to the newest model…just because.

I had the new grip installed onto my three-wood, which wasn’t on accident. It’s my most used and most reliable club and if the grip wasn’t going to work on that fella, it wasn’t going to work on any other clubs.

It worked on that club.

I’ve replaced my grips twice over the past five years, which I’m sure is making some of you say, “that’s not often enough”. But here’s the thing about me, I’m cheap. So the first thing I’m looking for in a grip is the ability to last. Not like the pieces of hot garbage I put on my clubs at the beginning of this season.

But I digress.

The next thing I’m looking for is size of the grip. I tend to strangle my golf clubs. A bigger grip allows me to still try to hold the club as tight as I want, but won’t let me due to the circumference of the grip. That plays into the final piece of my grip-demands puzzle, feel.

Ultimately, that’s what our beautiful game is all about, isn’t it? And at the same time, such a difficult thing to describe. Feel is unique to each of us, almost like a “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” type of thing where you know it…well…when you know it.

These grips are “just right” when it comes to feel. They are so comfortable in my hands and have greatly improved the way I feel the ball coming off the face of the club. Without thinking about it, I started to realize I could feel where on my three-wood I was striking the ball. Soon, I wasn’t worried about immediately tracking the ball off the club. I already knew where it was headed based on feel. This was an absolute shift-change for me.

At the very least, when it comes time to replace your grips, I would highly recommend buying one of these to try out. These grips check all three boxes for me: Durability, Size, and Feel.

Forward Golf may not be a household name, and they may not be available at your local retailer, but they certainly deserve to be both. These are quality, forward thinking, grips that could legitimately transform your game.

UPDATE: I’m all in.
