This news won’t shock anyone, but it confirms something we’ve all been suspecting. Tiger Woods will be in the field for the PGA Championship. Woods will occupy one of the 18 available spots held for previous tourney champions.

He is not the only golfer expected to make a return during this tournament. Defending champion Phil Mickelson has also entered the field despite not playing in a tournament since February.

The tournament is set to be played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from May 19-22. Tiger, for one, should be pretty familiar with the course at this point as he has been practicing there and going over tips with Director of Golf Cary Cozby since April 28th.

Tiger returned from his gruesome car accident earlier this year at the Masters and surprised everyone when he made the cut for the weekend after opening rounds of 71 and 74 in tough conditions. This led to near-instant speculation that he might try and play in more tournaments this season, and now, with his name confirmed for the PGA Championship, we have our answer.

As the weekend wore on at the Masters, Tiger was noticeably fatigued and finished with back-to-back 78s, which ultimately landed him in 47th, or 6th from last amongst those that made the cut.

Can the rest between Majors and a few friendly tips from the resident golf pro give Tiger enough juice to be a real threat for this tournament? Has the extra time helped further heal his leg and build his stamina? Or is he simply there for posterity and a boost to the ratings?

Only time will tell, but many golf fans have learned that you can never truly count Tiger out until the final hole. This year’s second Major should be a great watch!
