Time to Dress to Par-Tee with Original Penguin Apparel

Original Penguin Clothing, by Munsingwear, was first conceived in 1955 and is credited with being the creator of the original classic golf shirt.  Over the years that followed, Original Penguin has been worn by legends such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood.  But now that more than 60 years have passed since the brand’s inception, what has Original Penguin done to make sure it appeals to the current generation?

But the focus of this review is Original Penguin’s Golf collection, which is currently comprised of a quality selection of golf polos, pullovers, shorts and pants.  Specifically, I was lucky enough to try out the Re-Pete Print Polo, the Earl Championship Golf Polo and 56 Color Block Golf Polo and Slim Fit Herringbone Golf Shorts.

To start, the Re-Pete Print Polo was instantly my favorite simply because of the unique pattern.  Before golf, racing and sports cars were my secret passion, and the Re-Pete Print Polo ties my current favorite leisure activities together with the miniature penguins and checkered flags on a classy, lightweight and moisture-wicking polo shirt.  The contrasting, tipped collar and cuffs combined with the tapered-fit (featuring slimmer waist and chest sections) also help bring home that racing-inspired look.  In addition to looking good, the Re-Pete Print Polo helped keep me cool on the golf course and never got heavy with moisture.

The Earl Championship Golf Polo turned out to be a great everyday polo, as the solid-colored finish helped it look right on the golf course and in the office (which was great for when I was able to leave the office early and sneak in a Friday, twilight round).  The 100% Pima Cotton construction made the Earl Championship Golf Polo super soft, but also really durable and light (which has been a godsend on these high-90s, humid summer days in July).

In sum, the Earl Championship Golf Polo (which is available in Purple Cactus Flower, Crystal Teal, Amparo Blue, Black and Bright White) is perfect in a variety of settings.  No matter whether you’re gearing up for a summer round, a night out with friends or a casual, dress-down day at the office, the Earl Championship Golf Polo will look and feel perfect for each scenario.

Finally, 56 Color Block Golf Polos is the statement shirt out of the bunch.  This polo takes inspiration from Original Penguin’s iconic ’56 collection.  As pictured above, the shirt features a color blocked pattern with a two-toned finish through the front, a solid finish on the back and sleeves and contrast tipping around the ribbed collar, each sleeve cuff and the top of the left chest pocket.  As a result, the 56 Color Block Golf Polo is great for the golfer looking for the vintage golf shirt with a modern spin.

On that note, the 56 Color Block Golf Polo also is a polo that takes some of the best features from the Re-Pete Print and Earl Championship Golf Polos.  Specifically, the 56 Color Block Golf Polo features a 60% Pima Cotton / 34% Polyester / 6% Spandex construction, making the polo really soft and very breathable, in addition to having plenty of stretch for when you really need to coil up in your backswing for that big drive.

The Slim Fit Herringbone Golf Shorts were another great surprise.  The stretch fabric made sure that I was never restricted in my movement, while the elastic gripper waistband made sure my shirt stayed tucked-in.  Additionally, the moisture-wicking material also helped me stay dry by releasing any excess heat and moisture coming off my body.

That said, I strongly recommend reviewing Original Penguin’s sizing chart if you’re looking into the Slim Fit Herringbone Golf Shorts.  While the “Slim Fit” labeling might give you the impression that you should order a size up, Original Penguin designed the Herringbone Golf Shorts to be larger than they’re labeled.  To illustrate, a size 32 actually features a 34½” waist.
