Tony Romo to Make Broadcasting Debut at Colonial

Sporting a trophy and victory jacket that play second fiddle to those of The Masters, the Dean & DeLuca Invitational at Colonial should draw a lot of media attention this week when the golfers hit the course. But there will be another reason for folks to watch the tournament this weekend.

It has long been known that Tony Romo will be entering the broadcasting booth on Sundays after retiring from the NFL but no one had any idea when he would begin his duties with CBS. It appears now, however, that Romo will be making his first appearance in a CBS jacket at Colonial next to his future partner, Jim Nantz, and analyst Nick Faldo.

The news was broken at the Ben Hogan Award ceremony when CBS producer Lance Barrow exclaimed to the audience that Romo would be introduced as the newest member of the CBS team this week at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational. Barrow then tried to save the surprise by swearing those in attendance to secrecy but the video of the announcement was already on Periscope and tweeted for the world to see. Maybe Barrow should’ve started out with the secret part.

Despite ruining the big CBS surprise, Barrow couldn’t help but boast about how good he believes Romo is going to be in the booth. “I think he is going to be great,” Barrow said. “I think we have the next John Madden on your hands.” Well, great may be a strong word to describe John Madden’s broadcasting skills but he did have a long career.

Some may be wondering why Romo will be getting his start by broadcasting a golf event but it actually makes a lot of sense. Romo knows a lot about the sport and is pretty good at it, as evidenced by his competitive finish at a U.S. Open qualifier early this month. Add to the fact that this is his first broadcasting experience, CBS probably wants to start him off at a slower pace to gain experience and golf is much slower than the NFL.

With Romo now guaranteed to be in the booth this week, golf fans and Tony fans alike should be interested to see how the former quarterback does with a microphone in his hands.
