On Friday in The Greenbrier Classic Troy Matteson needed only 19 putts to record his second round of –9 under par 61 on The Old White TPC, in Western Virginia.

He said, “It was unlike any day I’ve had this year.”

That seemed like an understatement, as many of us lesser mortals count different numbers, like how many three putts have I had today.

Troy went on to explain how he had struggled with his putting all year long;

 “I just haven’t been getting it in the hole all year, and to have a day like this really kind of turns things around.”

“But I’ve always been a streaky putter. When I get hot, it usually falls in from just about anywhere and that’s one of those days today.”

As good as that score is, the low record on the PGA TOUR is 18 in a round. Amazingly this record is shared by no less than seven players. Corey Pavin is one of them, at the Bell Canadian Open In 2000.

The most recent came from Blake Adams, at the Verizon Heritage 2010.

Unfortunately, but quite amazingly, normal Troy followed his 61 with a 71. It seems that no one has ever figured out why that happens.

It seems impossible to record that many shots more than the round before, maybe it was just down to the putting.

Enjoy your game and Putt well.
