Walking on Clouds with the TRUE linkswear Outsiders

I still remember my first pair of golf shoes because I still have scars from all the blisters.

Fortunately, golf shoe manufactures have really made drastic improvements with the overall quality of their products.  And while the mainstream brands make great stuff, something is still missing…  Absolute Comfort.

I’m talking “playing barefoot on well-manicured fairways and soft greens” level of comfort, and I think I finally found THE golf shoe of all shoes.

TRUE linkswear was founded 2009 and instantly became recognized for their unparalleled comfort.  Unfortunately, TRUE had a bit of a sophomore-slump and lost its way.

Fortunately, TRUE has returned to what made their shoes so successful—comfort and quality—with the new Originals and Outsiders.

I decided to test the the TRUE Originals because I was particularly interested in the minimalist design.  I wanted to feel how close I could get to that “barefoot” feeling.  So to put the Originals to the test, I wore them in every environment I could think of: indoor simulator turf, driving range mats, and out on the course.  And after being very impressed with how comfortable the Originals were in each scenario, I decided to put them to the absolute test: wear them from my house, drive with them to the course, play a round, and then drive back home.

In sum, I’m very happy to say that after conducting some very extensive testing, I believe that I’ve found the most comfortable pair of golf shoes on the market, and the best part is that you can wear them everywhere.

Moreover, while I only reviewed the Originals, TRUE also makes the Outsiders, and here’s a brief summary of each model:

  • TRUE Originals — Features a 0 heel drop and ultra thin sole for more feedback, feel, and power.  As a result, the Originals are also a more flexible design that, although a little less stable, will provide the maximum feel of the ground underneath your feet.
  • TRUE Outsiders — Features a 4-6 mm “Transitional Drop” (as opposed to the more common 12-24 mm of heel lift) that allows your feet to sit virtually fit and body weight to be distributed throughout the sole.  Accordingly, the Outsiders provide more stability at the cost of slightly less flexibility and feedback.

But regardless which model you go with, both TRUE models feature a spikeless design and are made with premium leather that comes with a 2-year warranty.  In addition, the Originals and Outsiders both come with a “Natural Width Toe Box,” which makes these shoes significantly more comfortable over the mainstream options.

Instead of cramming your toes into the traditional, progressively narrowing-toe design, TRUE widens the toe box so your toes can comfortably sit and wiggle around, which also provides you with drastically more feedback.  Standing alone, this feature separates TRUE from everything else out there, but perhaps my favorite feature is TRUE’s “Sock Liner.”

Basically, the Originals and Outsiders have a “sock” lining inside the shoe that creates that “just right” feeling once you slide your foot in, even before you lace up.  While the Sock Liner felt great from the first time I tried on the Outsiders, I really appreciated it when I had to deal with funky lies (e.g., bunker play, soft ground, uphill/downhill/sidehill lies).

No matter what I was dealing with, I never felt like my foot was sliding around or that I needed to tie my shoes super-tight to make sure I was locked-in and there wasn’t any disconnect between my feet and ground.

The combination of all these features genuinely makes a huge difference.  In fact, I could immediately tell when I didn’t have a good, stable footing before taking a shot and, as a result, could preemptively find a new position to anchor myself so I could transfer all my energy into that next shot.

At the end of the day, it’s important that all of your golf equipment compliments and supports your game: whether its your clubs, the golf ball, and even your apparel.  And on that note, there’s one thing we can all benefit from: a more comfortable shoe that will also establish a quality connection with the ground.

Golf is a game of feels and I really don’t think I’ll find another shoe besides TRUE’s Originals that provide a similar barefoot connection with the golf course, but can also function regardless if I’m the clubhouse, at the driving range, or in a greenside bunker.

Ever since golf became a competitive outlet, nothing brings Eric more joy than a well struck 4 iron. And despite living in NYC, Eric makes it a priority to work on his game and fitness during the week, along with a round or two over the weekend. Fortunately, he’s got a very understanding fiancé who (for the time being) accepts him and his obsession. Follow Eric on IG @hozel_rocket.
