PXG and TaylorMade: When the Hunter becomes the Hunted

In 2014, PXG broke into the industry with a sledgehammer.  While all the major OEMs had become household names after years of releasing quality, tour-proven products, PXG showed up overnight and landed on the tip of everyone’s tongues.

And this shouldn’t be a surprise when you familiarize yourself with PXG’s founder, Bob Parsons.  But initially, the only thing people wanted to talk about was PXG’s outrageous pricing (e.g., a set of the 0311 irons goes for ~$3,000).  However, PXG did bring something very new to the table: TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) filing.  Allegedly, TPE helps create a more connected feel, better sound, and also transfers more energy into the ball.

While TPE has received mixed reviews (some people think it does work, others find that it actually reduces feedback and the PXG irons are simply low-lofted rocket launchers), PXG was the only person selling irons with a magic filling.

That was until TaylorMade launched the P790 with Speed Foam.  And it should be no surprise, PXG immediately responded with a lawsuit alleging violation of PXG patents.  PXG also requested a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to halt the sale of P790s, but the request was quickly denied.

Well, TaylorMade has flipped the script and recently filed suit against PXG, alleging violation of TM patents concerning irons and woods.  And contrary to PXG’s initial suit, TaylorMade isn’t targeting one model.  Nope, they’re looking to hit PXG where it’ll really hurt:  the entire line of 0311 irons.  Also on the kill list is the 0811 drivers and 0341 fairway woods.  Mind you, TaylorMade is also now owned by KPS Capital Partners LP, and it should be no surprise to anyone who’s seen Wall Street or Boiler Room that the guys at KPS probably aren’t looking to play nice.

While Tiger has the spotlight right now, it’ll be very interesting to see whether PXG can stand it’s ground or time to start developing a new product line.  While I don’t think too many people will miss $3,000 irons, PXG brought the biggest technological advancement in golf equipment since titanium drivers…
