Which Golf Commentators are Fan Favorites? Some Answers Might Surprise You

When it comes to commentators, voice, analysis, and expertise are important, as the choice of broadcasting companies is what fans will be forced to listen to for the duration of their viewing experience.

Everyone has their favorites: Football’s various tandems, including Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, or Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, come to mind.

In Hockey, there is nothing better than Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk.

Golf has various commentators and a wide variety of teams, but there is nothing quite like Jim Nantz on Sunday at Augusta, and a new poll shows a majority of golf fans would agree.

Power Poll surveyed various viewers and found that Nantz, along with Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee, were the two favorites.

Nantz accumulated 48 votes, equating to 34% of the surveyed. Chamblee, with 24 votes, or 17%, was second-most liked. Paul Azinger was third with 13 votes, or 9%. Dan Hicks had 8 votes, or 6%.

PGA Magazine Senior Writer and Editor J. Roger Graves said:

“Jim Nantz and Dan Hicks are above average air-traffic controllers but seldom tread on controversial or insightful subjects,”

Meanwhile, Ron Borges, a longtime Boston sportswriter, said Chamblee, who is one of golf’s more polarizing figures, especially considering his narration of the LIV-PGA Tour drama, said:

“I find Chamblee thought-provoking but sometimes he speaks like he thinks he’s Moses coming down from the mountain. An occasional bit of ‘there may be another side to this’ would be wise.”

In terms of the wishlist for future commentators in the booth, it seems Phil Mickelson is atop the list, as viewers would love a little bit more zing when it comes to broadcasting as golf moves forward.

Joey Klender is a reporter covering Equipment, Footwear, and Apparel. A huge golf fan, he calls a certain week in April his favorite of the year. Inspired by the likes of Woods, Palmer, McIlroy, and Koepka, Joey plays over 100 times a year in the South Central Pennsylvania area. When he isn't golfing, he is probably thinking about golfing, but he might be watching other sports, writing, or playing poker.
