Matthias Schmid, who goes by Matti, had a wonderful 2021.

The 24 year old won the Silver Medal as the Open’s leading amateur and secured his DP World Tour status for 2022 in just 7 starts. Here’s all you need to know about the Rookie of the Year — a bit of extra knowledge for the next time he appears on a leaderboard near you.

Germany
Matti was born and grew up in Maxhvette, Germany where his dad Schmid Sr. was a Tour Professional at their local golf club. Matti started playing at 4, joining in while his dad gave lessons to other kids.

Matti made it onto the Bavarian team at 11 and the German national team at 15, before going to Louisville in 2017 aged 20 to study finance and play for the Cardinals.

Louisville
Matti played for four years at Louisville and credits the coaching staff, and former PGA Tour player Ted Schulz in particular, for developing his game.

It all culminated in him winning the European Amateur in 2019 and 2020 before his Silver Medal success in 2021.

After his win at the Open, Schmid turned professional and earned his DP World Tour Status for 2022 in his seventh start thanks to a 2nd place finish at the Dutch Open in September.

Matti then capped off an impressive 2021 with an 11th at the Mallorca Open and a 9th place finish at the Alfred Dunhill in rain swept Scotland.

Matti is only the second German to win the award after Martin Kaymer in 2007.

No pressure then Matti — just a major winner, former world #1 and Ryder Cup winner to live up to.
