“Swing your Swing.” No better words than these from Arnold Palmer capture the current state of swings on the PGA TOUR.

From Justin Thomas to Dustin Johnson, players of all shapes and sizes are swinging across an inordinate amount of planes and angles. These unique swings truly show no one “perfect swing” exists and customizing your swing to your body’s strengths and weaknesses is critical. How can you go about understanding how to effectively customize your golf swing? Fortunately, the answer is out there in the form of a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Screen.

“What is a TPI screen?”

A TPI screen is administered by a trainer who has completed TPI’s comprehensive training and consists of a series of individual fitness tests that work to assess your physicality for golf. These tests target your back, shoulders, and wrists, among others.

The results from these tests allow a trainer to identify areas where your physicality needs some improvement and how improving these areas can enhance your golf game.

Not all TPI trainers are golf professionals, but the TPI screen has been developed to correlate with the golf swing. Often, TPI professionals can offer exercises to target specific areas and prevent them from hindering your golf game.

In many cases, information learned during a TPI screen can help you and your golf professional develop a swing that works around your limitations. Ultimately, completing a TPI screen will help you understand the most efficient and effective way to improve your physicality for golf, or how to customize your swing around your body’s limitations.

“Does the TPI screen work?”

Currently, the top three players in the Official Golf World Rankings use TPI screens and TPI professionals. Additionally, all twelve members of the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup Team use TPI professionals.

Through information from TPI professionals, dozens of PGA TOUR players have learned how to condition their bodies for golf at the highest level — think Jon Rahm’s shorter back swing to accommodate for limited mobility or Jordan Spieth’s bent left elbow at the top of the swing to help with squaring the club face.

If the best players in the world utilize TPI screens to help them hit the golf ball freakishly long and with pinpoint accuracy, why wouldn’t it work for the average amateur player?

“Logistics of a TPI Screen”

TPI professionals operate in nearly all major metropolitan areas in the U.S, Canada, Europe, and Australia. You can find an instructor in your area through the following link on the TPI website. From here, you can enter in your area and search for professionals.

Contact information is provided for TPI professionals that choose to be listed and the majority of them are willing to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding a TPI screen. Most screens can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes and cost anywhere from $60 to $150 USD depending on personal training rates in your market and the trainer’s background.
