Will Zalatoris Withdraws from CJ CUP Byron Nelson — And It’s Back Related
Will Zalatoris has withdrawn from the CJ CUP Byron Nelson this weekend at TPC Craig Ranch, and it appears the reason is a flare-up of his back injury.
Two years ago, at the BMW Championship, Zalatoris withdrew halfway through the event due to a back injury. This injury would lead to his losing the next year of his career as he went through surgery and rehabilitation.
Zalatoris has not had much of an issue with his back throughout the year, especially since he modified his swing to alleviate much of the torque that his back felt with the previous technique.
However, with any major injury, the rehab process can be lengthy. Zalatoris said there were risks of a potential flare-up and it has happened ahead of this weekend’s tournament, which takes place in his hometown.
Zalatoris officially withdrew from the CJ CUP Byron Nelson today, as the PGA Tour Communications posted today:

Zalatoris also posted a communication on his Instagram:

“Hey y’all,
I am frustrated to miss a tournament I’ve enjoyed going to since I was nine years old. The Nelson and the Salesmanship Club have been so great to me my entire playing career and I hope to win Mr. Nelson’s trophy someday. My back needs some rest and recovery. I am ahead of schedule according to my doctors but unfortunately the first six months back are the most important for the long term health of my back. I need to be prudent to make sure I don’t miss a big chunk of time again. I hate that a flare up happened during one of my favorite weeks all year, but we knew something like this was a possibility early on in my return to golf. Thanks to the Nelson’s new partner in CJ in making a long term commitment to my hometown event.
Sorry to my hometown fans that I won’t be around this week to try to keep that trophy in Dallas this year. Look forward to going after the trophy again in 2025. All the best and look forward to seeing everyone very soon.
WZ”
It is not known when Zalatoris’s next appearance will be, but he is likely willing to make this sacrifice to compete at the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, later this month.
