Reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark was one of the golfers rumored to be joining LIV Golf this past offseason. And while it didn’t come to fruition, Clark confirmed that there was plenty of fire to that smoke.

“I definitely met with LIV and went through those discussions. I wanted to see what they could bring to the table,” Clark said after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am when the final round was canceled due to inclement weather in Southern California.

The win came after Clark broke the historic course’s 18-hole record with a 60 on Saturday. After that round, he did have an interesting comment about potentially winning a tournament after 54 holes.

“I ultimately declined going to LIV because I felt like I still have a lot of things left in the tank on the PGA Tour and I wanted to chase records, I wanted to chase world ranking. My dream is to try to be one of the top players in the world if not the top player. I just grew up always imagining winning PGA Tour events. So, I ultimately, I chose my legacy over LIV, and that’s really what it came down to.”

Clark said that he spoke with the player directors on the PGA Tour’s Policy Board, and that discussion led to his deciding to stay put for 2024.

“[Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, and Adam Scott] really gave me some great advice and some counsel. I didn’t want them to sway me in a certain way, but I definitely wanted their counsel and I just wanted to honor them and the amount of time and work and effort they have put into this agreement now with SSG and where the Tour is going,” Clark said.

Clark, who is up to No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking after taking home a victory in the year’s second Signature Event, did admit to taking a wait-and-see approach when it comes to his long-term future.

“I don’t know what the future holds with my career and what the PGA Tour and LIV are going to do,” Clark said, “but at least for this season I am 100 percent set on the PGA Tour, and I want to try to get to as high in the world as I possibly can.”

Clark was rumored to be joining Jon Rahm’s team on the LIV tour. In this year’s first LIV event, Rahm finished third in Mayakoba, Mexico while his Legion XIII squad won the team portion of the tournament.
