YIKES: Ryan Palmer Takes 6 Shots To Escape The Bunker
When you’re watching the PGA TOUR, it’s not often that you get reminded of something that you could wind up doing on the course. Ryan Palmer showed us all that even the best are bound to make some major mistakes.
The Genesis Open has provided great performances from some of the best players in golf. However, Ryan Palmer’s epic fail from the bunkers has stolen the show. Palmer hit his tee shot off the mark on the par-3 14th into a bunker on the left side of the green. Normally, you wouldn’t think this is a bad situation because you still have a chance to save par. However, Palmer made it much worse for himself.
After landing the tee shot in the bunker, Palmer’s second shot was short and it ended up hitting the lip of the bunker. His third shot (and second shot out of the bunker) didn’t do much better as he hit it off of the lip again. On the third shot, he still couldn’t get the trajectory right, hitting the lip yet again. And this time he managed to bury the ball into the bunker.

Palmer begrudgingly went for his fourth shot as he made a big splash of sand. However, the ball didn’t move forward, only rolling back down into his footprint. The fifth shot was even worse, going nowhere again. Finally, on the sixth shot, Palmer was able to splash the ball out of the bunker and hit it to within 11 feet of the cup. After a two-putt, Palmer emerged with a snowman and a quintuple bogey.
What’s even more embarrassing for Palmer is that other players who hit that same bunker were able to get a par save, almost two-thirds of the time.
It wasn’t all bad for Palmer though, as he was able to finish up his round on a positive note. In his next five holes, Palmer notched an eagle and two birdies, bringing him close to where he was, before the bunker disaster.
If it’s any solace to Palmer, I’m sure a lot of golfers were feeling his pain during this situation. It’s always a positive to see that he was able to bounce back as he’ll hope to do that in his next tournament.
