Brittany Lincicome Just Became the 6th Woman to Compete on PGA TOUR
While all eyes are likely on The Open Championship this weekend, there is some PGA TOUR history being made at another event and it deserves to be recognized by the golf world.
On Thursday, Brittany Lincicome became just the sixth woman to compete on the PGA TOUR with some of the best golfers in the world. The 32-year old Lincicome received a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the Barbasol Championship, which is being played opposite of The Open Championship.
She teed off on for her first round as only the second woman since 1952 to compete on the men’s tour, possibly showing us a glimpse of the future.
Lincicome may not be the best player on the LPGA Tour but her spot in the tournament seems well deserved. She has made over $8 million in her LPGA career and is a two-time winner of the LPGA major, the ANA Inspiration. Despite this feat, however, Brittany’s appearance on the PGA TOUR hasn’t seen much media coverage because of the major she’s playing opposite of.

Lincicome doesn’t want the media attention though and doesn’t want to be seen as some amazing barrier breaker, she’s just happy to be playing. And this isn’t anything new for Lincicome either, as she’s played with men a lot. “I have played with a lot of guys growing up,” Lincicome said, “and I just feel like they push me to want to be better and play better.”
So far, it doesn’t seem like playing with the guys is bringing out her best just yet. After her first round, Lincicome has only managed to finish at six-over par, which puts in a tie for 126th, 13 shots back of the lead.
The day did have some positives for her, however, as she smashed a few drives down the fairway and showed signs of some competitive play. She’ll have a chance to build on those positives Friday to push ahead of the cut line.
It’s amazing to see a woman competing with the PGA TOUR and one has to wonder if we’ll see more women follow in Lincicome’s footsteps in other tournaments and events. Regardless, her performance will definitely be something to keep an eye on as she plays opposite of The Open this week.
