Tony Romo Wins Another Event, Turns Down Prize Money
After having some pretty terrible results in his first PGA TOUR appearance and in ensuing U.S. Open qualifiers, Tony Romo has seemed to find his golf game again. And he’s not even taking the financial rewards that come with it!
We talked about how Romo absolutely obliterated an amateur tournament in Texas with a nine-stroke victory, and he carried that momentum into the next tournament he played. Participating in the American Century Championship this past week, Romo won out, becoming the first new champion of the event in over three years.
Romo had been runner-up in the tournament three times before finally taking the title for himself last week.
“It’s a special win,” said Romo. “It’s a privilege to play in this event. I think I’ll always feel lucky. It’s one of our favorite weeks of the year.” After winning, however, America’s new favorite broadcaster didn’t even take the prize money.

The winnings that Romo would have claimed totaled about $125,000, which is probably nothing to a guy who made millions in the NFL but still would’ve been some nice pocket change for a retired NFL quarterback.
So why didn’t he take the money? No, it wasn’t done simply the goodness of his heart, but rather because he didn’t want to lose his status as an amateur golfer. R
Romo loves his current amateur status and playing amateur events so this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.
And despite this being a celebrity amateur event, Romo did play some stiff competition. He defeated Mark Mulder, who was the previous champion the past three years, along with other good celebrity amateurs like Steph Curry and Ray Allen.
Perhaps with his job as a broadcaster and using golf as merely a hobby right now, it would make more sense to keep the amateur status. But if he keeps lighting up the scorecards, professional golf may be in the former quarterback’s future. It will definitely be something to watch in the future.
