Connecticut Golfer Attacked By Bobcat On Golf Course
What’s the worst thing to happen to you during your round? Lose a dozen ProV1s? Shoot a 120? How about getting mauled by a ferocious bobcat? Wait, what?
Take what happened last week in Connecticut to a 70-year-old man. Mike Popowski headed to the Mohegan Sun Golf Club to play a quick round with a few of his friends. The group was able to get through the first six holes of the course like normal but that is when a bobcat appeared at the seventh hole and attacked Poplowski.
Poplowski doesn’t recall much of the event other than seeing the bobcat rushing at him with the stench of a skunk and a deep growl. After that, friends described the animal jumping on Poplowski, biting the left side of his body and clawing his head. His friend attempted to help Poplowski by hitting the bobcat with his club until Poplowski fell down a hill. The bobcat then released its hold and ran off.

According to Poplowski’s friend, Fred Martinelli, it was a crazy sight. “It was surreal. You see what was taking place, going down, and you’re saying, ‘That can’t possibly be whatever it was on top of Mike.'” But it was exactly what happened and resulted in Poplowski getting staples in his head and other medical treatments.
As for the bobcat, authorities confirmed that the animal was rabid and began treating Poplowski for rabies. Apparently, the same animal had attacked a horse earlier in the day before coming across Poplowski’s foursome. The bobcat was eventually tracked down and put down by the authorities following the incident.
We’re glad to see that Poplowski and all involved were ok after the incident but this serves as a reminder to always be aware of your surroundings on the course. No matter where you are, you never know what could be hiding in the brush.
