LAB Golf DF3 Putter — First Impressions and Putts

As a devoted and loyal user of the Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport for going on three years, I was hesitant to take it out of my bag for the untraditional, non-blade LAB Golf DF3.

But in my first few putts, I knew I was going to be in good hands. I’m not one to want change in my golf bag, especially when it comes to putters. Irons and woods are the same way. Wedges, well, I’ll swap them out pretty frequently based on how things ar going.

LAB Golf reached out a few weeks back and wanted to put a putter in my hands, and I decided on the DF3 because of its overwhelming popularity, which has made it a success of maybe not the overnight variety, but it is certainly a hot commodity right now.

Without doing the Virtual Fitting, which I was told is under a major overhaul currently, I picked a 34″ stock DF3.

I have not played a mallet head putter in some time. It’s been about three years since I decided to put the TaylorMade Spider in the “other” bag that sits in my basement and has a bunch of clubs that are pretty much eye candy.

The DF3 is not your run-of-the-mill mallet. It has technology that will square the face, incorporates automatic shaft lean, and helps take one tremendous factor out of the game. It is truly a massive putterhead that screams forgiveness.

My first rolls with the DF3 were solid. It is definitely something to get used to, as any major putter change would be. It is heavy, which is a nice touch, but it also has such an untraditional shape that looking down at it is a completely new experience on its own.

I like the feel; it is solid, and striking the ball feels like something that is incredibly easy to do. Even on mishits, it does not feel like a total loss of a stroke. It feels as if the head makes up for the simple mistakes amateurs like you and me would make.

Regardless, it is still a very fresh feeling, and I haven’t gotten it out on the course yet. It has only hit about 200 balls on my BirdieBall putting mat, which is 30 feet long and gives me a good idea of what lag putts will be like.

In the next week, I will post a full-scale review with on-course commentary of what the LAB DF3 did for my game on the course.
