LIV Golf Takes Another Page From Team Sports By Opening a Transfer Window

LIV Golf’s team concept is about to get a bit more interesting.

CEO Greg Norman announced today that the league will be creating a trade window from now until June 9. The purpose, like in other sports, is for teams toward the top of the standings to improve their lot for the rest of the season, whereas lower-performing teams can look to the future.

Norman said:

“By opening a trade window midway through the season, all 13 teams have an opportunity to fine-tune their rosters and assess their team’s composition and performance.”

Trades were made last offseason in LIV, but this is the first time that swaps will be allowed during the regular season. It mirrors major U.S. team sports, which have trading deadlines set for midway through their seasons.

Norman said in an interview last week that he was hoping that each of LIV’s 13 franchises would also be able to have golf courses to call their own and play in front of “home fans.”

Norman said that teams will also be able to negotiate contract extensions with their own players whose deals expire at the end of the current season. Before, signings could only be made after the season ended.

The goal, Norman says, is to put pressure on all players to perform for their team. LIV awards its team champions at the end of the season with a $14 million bonus. Currently, Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC team leads Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII in the standings. The Crushers won the title a year ago.
