Lower Your Ball Flight to Beat the Breeze
With the ever changing climate we live in and the seemingly everlasting stiff breeze that blows across the links, the ability to be able to control the trajectory of your golf ball is a huge advantage to have in your locker.
I’ve seen people try many different methods in an attempt to lower the trajectory of their shots yet they all seem complicated and hard to replicate on a consistent basis, so here I have put together a step by step guide to help you successfully lower your ball flight with every club from driver to sand wedge.
The first thing you must do is to set up to the shot in exactly the same way that you would to play a normal full swing shot. From you set up position you now need to move the ball back in your stance about 1 inch……yes that’s right just 1 inch.(pic 1), this will help de-loft the club face at impact.
The next thing you need to do is to grip down on the club about 1 inch, this should see your hands approximately in the middle to bottom half of the grip dependent on the size of your hands (pic 2). This will help you to steepen your angle of attack into impact.
Next you need to place around 60% of your weight on your left side if you’re a right handed player (pic 3) or right side if you’re a left handed player.
Now you are ready to start your swing, just make your backswing keeping the weight over your left leg (right leg for left handed player), it may feel to you that you only make a ¾ back swing due to the fact that you have a little more weight than normal set on your left side for a right handed player (pic 4) or your right side for a left handed player.
Now just make your normal downswing, the changes made in the set up will now start to take effect in steepening the angle of your attack into the ball and de-lofting the club face at impact to give you a lower ball flight (pic 5).
As with every swing you make it is essential that you make a committed follow through and this shot is no different although the more you can finish with your hands, arms and club out in front of your chest (pic 6) the lower you will fly your golf ball.
