Major Updates to McIlroy-Scheffer vs. Koepka-DeChambeau Loom
There are major updates to the Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler vs. Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau matchup, which is set for December.
First, the competition will not fall under The Match, as past iterations have. This will be called The Showdown, according to Front Office Sports. It will still be aired on TNT.
Additionally, we will see 18 holes of play, a big win for fans and the players, which will not be identical to past iterations that have seen just 12 holes, which is, in my opinion, a waste.
The format, whether stroke play, best ball, better ball, alternate shot, or any other variation of team golf, is still being finalized.
There will be no money on the line for the players, although they will be paid a tasty appearance fee of $4 million.
The match will be played at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, and a six-year deal with MGM was made for the event. It will be played at various locations over that time frame, some in the U.S. and some Internationally. The plan is to do it in the Middle East next year.
The event is also not affiliated with either tour, even though one team represents the PGA TOUR and the other LIV Golf. Neither tour is directly involved in the event.
Bryan Zuriff, who created The Match, is also producing this new The Showdown event and said this is about more than just money:
"This is more than money. This is a lot of pride. There's no amount of money that's going to make anyone excited to watch something. These are guys that need to win this for many different reasons."
