The WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale typically has the rowdiest golf crowds of the year, so naturally, it will become the first golf venue to host live, in-person sports betting at a PGA Tour event.

The PGA Tour took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a DraftKings sportsbook that will open east of the Stadium Course and will be open year-round starting in October 2023.

The facility will join the four major team sports in the U.S. along with NASCAR, with betting facilities at the venues in which the events take place.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said:

“If you would’ve asked me, ‘Where do you think that might happen, at some point?’ This would’ve been the location.”

Monahan said this facility will serve as a test to see if an on-site sportsbook will be viable for events that take place in states where gambling is legal.

He said:

“We want to make certain we’re focused on, making sure this works and works in a way that creates a great experience for those people that are coming down here. I think we’ll take the findings here and as opportunities present themselves, we’ll consider them.”

One potential issue moving forward is many PGA Tour events take place in states where gambling isn’t yet legal, including Florida, California, Texas, and Georgia.
