Rahm & McIlroy Demonstrate Their Commitment to the PGA TOUR

Jon Rahm has hit out at the LIV defectors, adding to the divide between Tours that now exists in the golfing world. As he prepares to defend his maiden major victory this week at Brookline, Rahm explained that the three-round, shotgun start format with no cut is not a golf tournament.

In addition to securing a second Canadian Open title last week, Rory McIlroy then went straight to Brookline for the third major of 2022.

There, he joined the melee of press teams vying for some saucy conference soundbites from the likes of Phil Mickelson, who was noticeably uncomfortable during his remarks on Monday.

Rory explained that the LIV division will “fracture the game“. He was asked whether the defectors have ‘betrayed’ the PGA Tour. He did not entertain the use of the word ‘betrayal’ but chose to explain that it is disappointing.

Pros (for PGA):

Behind the scenes, Jay Monahan and his team at the PGA Tour must be happy with such strong showings from their most capable representatives. The ideal scenario for them is that the LIV Tour is painted as a tournament full of golfers past their best, who have given up trying to compete with the world’s best, and would rather be paid to play, regardless of the result, and tournament status. The PGA Tour remains the best place to play, with the best competition and the highest standards.

Pros (for LIV):

The pros for the LIV team are that more players are starting to side with them, and taking less heat for doing so as it becomes less of a headline. Pat Perez doesn’t exactly stir up the media in the same way DJ does. The divide between Tours will continue to promote the LIV Series, publicity is not an issue for them right now.

The annual videos have started coming in showing the length of the US Open rough, difficulty of the course, and the set-up. It is set to be an exciting competition, one where there may be some awkward conversations between pros in the LIV Series and the PGA Tour stalwarts.
