Birdieball and Birdieball turf review

This video was shot in my office parking lot. Birdieball is an excelent way to work on your game during your lunch break, while your kids play at the park or in your back yard. The links to all the products used in this review are below.

How often do you hit balls? How many times a week do you go to the range or smash balls into a net at home? If you are like me and many golfers are you don’t have the time, access or home facilities to work on your game the way you would like to. For me the bulk of my practice time comes on my lunch break while I am at work.

Its pretty easy to find a space in a parking lot to chip balls and if you are brave enough, some longer pitch shots towards a tree in the space between parking lots. But how are you supposed to work on your other clubs? You must be out of your mind to hit 7 irons in your parking lot, in business casual attire that doesn’t result in a broken window. Birdie Ball has a solution to this dilemma.

What the Heck is a Birdie Ball?

BirdieBall is the revolutionary limited flight practice golf ball that has been amazing people for over a decade. It flies a maximum of 40 yards and mimics the feel and flight path of a real golf ball. It’s a little bit bigger than a regular golf ball and looks more like a napkin ring. Its hollowed out in the middle so if you hold it up to your eye you can see straight through to the other side.

The whole idea behind the product is to make golf accessible to all people, anywhere, regardless of location. From the park to the parking lot you can play golf anywhere you want. The design of the BirdieBall allows you to hit ANY CLUB you want. Woods to wedges can be used with this product. Air travels through the opening and causes the BirdieBall to slow down quickly. The material used to construct the BirdieBall is a hard PVC like material, capable of withstanding repeated impact.

Does the BirdieBall Work?

After receiving my BirdieBall’s and BirdieBall Mat I made plans to try out this product the best way I knew how…. In my office parking lot during my lunch break. Setup is as easy as opening a new box of balls on the first tee. You just take it out and hit it. I got two mats/ turfs from BirdieBall so I could stand on one and hit off the other. I’ll talk about the turf later. On the box they say that they fly an average of 40 yards. This is an average so if you plan on hitting a longer iron it will go further. More like 50-60 yards depending on wind. I estimated the distance, took out the mat’s and a 7 iron and went to work.

The first thing I noticed right of the bat is that they do fly like a real golf ball. I tend to have more of a natural fade when I hit a ball and the BirdieBall faded left to right. I hit a few shots like I normally would, aiming at a flag I put into the grass and they all reacted the same way. Picked up the 6 “balls” and walked back to the mat. Because they are hollow in the middle you can just stack them up down the shaft of your club in stead of trying to carry all of them. This time I setup to hit a draw.

Again all 6 shots would draw right to left as promised. Picked up and then did my best to hit straight shots. Same results as before. They do what they say they are going to do. No special gimmick needed to get it to work and if you top it or shank one you will see it without the risk of breaking a window or denting a nearby car. The only thing that’s not exactly like a real golf ball is the sound it makes. You hear a click like you would when you hit a real ball, but it’s followed by this fun, hollow, whooshing sound. It takes a little bit to get used to it but at the same time it’s kind of fun.

Birdie Turf

The BirdieBall turf is something special. I was not expecting it to be the quality and durability it was. When it was delivered to my house, I was surprised by the weight of the Birdie Ball Turf and the feel. I have used other at home turfs before and this one is easily the best one I have ever used. It weighs about 15 pounds and is about an inch or so thick. It measures at 22 x 36 and has a carry handle built into it. The turf has a mild trench on the edge that allows you to lay down your BirdieBall’s before you hit them and can be used to hold standard golf balls as well.

The thick material used on the mat allows you hit down directly onto the turf without damaging your club. Because of the weight of the product it doesn’t move easily from shot to shot so the need to adjust its position is minimal. I purposely came in steep several times to see how the turf would withstand someone who takes big divots and it held up to the abuse.

Having one turf mat is idea for anyone setting up a home simulator and is ideal for anyone looking to get some work in during their lunch break. Having two of them I was able to stand on one and hit off the other. This guaranteed a stance that was comfortable and consistent. It retails for $79.99 and is worth every penny. This is a high-quality hitting mat.

What I Didn’t Like

BirdieBall offers a great way to practice anywhere you want but there were two minor things that I didn’t like about the product. The first is that some of the BirdieBall’s would go out of round a bit. Nothing massive but you could see that some where not as perfectly round as they had been when they came out of the box. They still seemed to respond the same way as the ones that didn’t get their shape impacted by repeated abuse but its hard to say if I was getting true feedback or not.

The other minor thing I noticed was that hitting the BirdieBall off the grass without the turf was not ideal. They are designed to sit flat on the ground, giving you a defined area to strike them. When hitting them off the grass if you don’t push them down with your foot, they would lean to one side or the other, encouraging mishits and poor flight. There are plenty of accessories available on the BirdieBall website to correct this issue. Neither one of these things is a deal breaker for me.

Options and Accessories

There are plenty of options when it comes to BirdieBall. I only tested out their flagship product and their hitting turf, but they offer a lot more than that. The BirdieBall’s come in several packaging options. You can purchase a single Birdie Ball for $4.49 or a bucket of 50 for $84.99.

I mentioned above that hitting off the grass is not ideal. If you don’t want to go with the turf, they offer a strike pad that ranges from $15.99 to $29.99. BirdieBall has even started developing a type of goal that closely resembles something you find when playing Frisbee golf. The BirdieBall brand has more than just balls and hitting mats. They offer everything from putting greens to full driving range setups.

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
