REVIEW: No Offseason With adidas Golf COLD.RDY

Fortunately, Mother Nature spared us and kept the weather in the NYC-area between the 40s and 50s until the end of Thanksgiving. While there’s no guarantees how December, January, February and most of March will go, what I do know is that as long as the ground isn’t frozen, I’ll be ready to play in comfort.

A few weeks ago, adidas Golf launched the COLD.RDY collection, which included a mix of jackets, vests and hoodies (which have quickly become the “must have” cool-weather golf apparel piece).

The short version is that adidas has designed the COLD.RDY collection pieces to retain warmth, but keep air moving throughout the body to keep you cool and dry, all while remaining lightweight. Said differently, these are the pieces that will allow you to shoot your best scores even after all the leaves have fallen off the trees.

I was fortunate enough to try out the ¼ Zip (Navy), Hoodie (Black) and Zip Jacket (Black). Each of the pieces featured a raised neck collar, which is great to help keep the wind off your neck, and cinched wrists, which help keep the warmth in without interfering with your grip.

The zip-up pockets and cinched wrists mean you can keep your hands warm &
have some tees ready for the next drive, all without interfering with your grip.

Starting with the Hoodie, which quickly became my favorite, the jet dark black gave the hoodie a very professional look that allowed it to look right at home, even at my country club. The hood was a great addition that I didn’t really appreciate until it got a bit windy. When it’s down, it doesn’t bunch up where it’s annoying and hanging all over the place. And while walking or riding in the cart in between shots, I was able to flp in right up and warm my neck and ears right up, instead of having to take on and off a wool hat.

Beside the obvious hood, another unique design feature of the Hoodie is the back hangs a little bit lower which is great from both a comfort standpoint (there’s no elastic in the waist-section on the Hoodie pulling the material in) and function (the lower back prevents from a breeze going up your back, whether you’re sitting, standing or walking) standpoint.

The ¼ Zip is, arguably, the most popular long sleeve option for fall golf. The zip allows you to get some ventilation, while also allowing you to zip everything up and encapsulate yourself when the temperatures drop and the wind starts to kick.

The ¼ Zip actually became my go-to option on the colder days when there was no wind, as I really liked having the ability to stay warm, but also have the option to open up the collar if it get too warm (which happened usually at the turn and 19th hole while having some post-round beers outside under a heat lamp).

Finally, the Zip Jacket, which actually became perfect on those in between days. As you might imagine, the Zip Jacket actually had the most versatility out of the COLD.RDY pieces I got to test, as it looks equally at home on the golf course, at a restaurant while grabbing a casual lunch or in the office. Simply put, the Zip Jacket provides you the flexibility to stay warm, while also allowing you to quickly and easily take it off if things warm up a little.

ALL of the COLD.RDY pieces worked as advertised. No matter if it was 40 or 55, I was warm and able to play golf without being restricted in my movement, which makes fall golf all that more enjoyable. Additionally, nothing in the collection is obnoxiously branded, meaning you can wear it straight off the course or in a variety of settings. Indeed, the Zip Jacket became something I regularly grabbed whenever I needed to run out of the house.

It is worth noting that each of the items had a standard fit; each was in the same size as my polo and nothing fit loose or too tight. This worked out perfectly as there was enough material were I was allowed to move without hitting any tension, but I also wasn’t carrying a bunch of excess material that could get bunched up or in the way.

Perhaps the only thing that makes the COLD.RDY collection even better is that most of the different pieces can be found for less than $100 through different retailers, like TGW, PGA TOUR SS, and Golf Galaxy, making it a perfect gift for a sibling, friend, family member or significant other who enjoys golfing when the weather starts to turn, without putting a hole in your wallet. Indeed, each of the COLD.RDY pieces are available in a variety of colors that go with a variety of outfits, meaning it’ll get plenty of usage at the beginning of the spring season and through most of fall golf.
