Players like Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter are being banned from competing in the Scottish Open next week, an event Co sanctioned by the DP world Tour (former European tour) and the PGA Tour.

The LIV Players are also banned from the Barracuda and Barabasol Championships scheduled later this season.

The repercussions are starting to add up. Alongside the ban, the LIV players are set to be fined £100,000 for breaching Tour rules, a seemingly insignificant amount of money considering their new financial status, but a message sent all the same.

CEO of the DP World Tour Keith Pelley chose to justify the sanctions by explaining that the LIV Players have disrespected the tours, and ignored the ‘meritocratic nature of professional golf’.

I agree with this, any time a player can be paid handsomely regardless of their performance, it undoes the competitive nature of the game, effectively lowering the incentive to succeed at the highest level.

LIV signing Martin Kaymer was quizzed today about the sanctions, and he only hopes that it doesn’t affect the Ryder Cup too much. It is hard to understand this perspective, if the Ryder Cup was a concern, the move to LIV cannot be justified as it was mentioned months ago that the rival Tour could affect eligibility to play in the event. We will await further player responses this week!
