Our Top 5 Golf Apps to Help Improve Your Game
With a seemingly unlimited array of golf apps available for fast download on your smartphone and tablets it’s understandably easy to get confused when deciding which ones are worth your time (and hard drive space). To help guide you our team has spent the last few months testing dozens of golf apps to see which really make the grade. With that said, here are our five favorite current golf apps, which coincidentally, we use ourselves on just about a daily basis.
GolfLogix: In our testing we found that they’re definitely a reason why GolfLogix is the world’s number 1 Golf GPS App. The app’s availability is amazing in that it can run its software on 76 different styles of smart phones from iPhone, Droid, Blackberry, and plenty more.
The free version of the app offers you the basic GPS package which includes score keeping and handicap tracking for 30,000 courses worldwide with map views of each hole via a satellite mapping feature. The championship membership will run you $19.99 and will provide you with some additional features like a “personal caddie” which displays what club to use based on your play, as well as layup yardages to any point on a hole, hazards, and the distance to front, middle and back of the green. Bonus content like money off certain golf magazines and other perks come with the paid package.
The paid package is up to you but we recommend grabbing the free version and giving it a go out on the course. It’s certainly one of our favorite golf GPS apps out there and for the majority of golfers it beats spending $200 or more on a separate golf GPS unit.
Shotly: Shotly (which formally went by the name Executive Caddie) is a comprehensive golf application available for Windows Phone and iPhone offering golfers the chance to record a USGA handicap, a GPS range finder with over 30,000 courses worldwide, and statistics tracking which records every part of your game from greens and fairways hit, to total putts and scores. The app publishers recently phased out the free version of the app but for $9.99 Shotly will give you everything you need to track your game. However, if you’re looking for some additional features like in-depth play and trend analysis which should help measure your strengths and weaknesses, look at upgrading to the “pro” version for $19.99.
What we love about this app is how well it tracks and records every detail of you round. Shotly allows you to record everything from greens and fairways hit to bunker shots, putts, hazards, and much more. The app will even allow you to keep track of each tee shot down to the detail of whether you went right, left, or short of the fairway. This info is then emailed to you after your round and average stats are kept in the app or on your free online account for easy access, making it excellent for anyone who wants extreme detail for his or her game.
SwingTip: We recently called the SwingTip “one of the most exciting golf tech products of the year,” and for good reason too. The SwingTip app is a free iPhone application that links up with the SwingTip swing analysis tool. The SwingTip itself connects to your iPhone via bluetooth and provides unparalleled detail into your swing.
Check out our full SwingTip review for more on how the app works.
Golf MTRx and Golf MTRx LT: The Golf MTRx app is another recently reviewed staff favorite. As we noted in a previous article, what amazes us most about the Golf MTRx app is the extremely high level of detail and swing feedback the program generates without the need for any additional sensing devices. To use the app, you simply hook your iPhone into your belt or tuck it into your pants and swing away. The result is amazingly accurate information about your swing tempo, moment of peak acceleration, and so much more.
The app itself is a bit expensive at around $14.99 but given the fact that there is no additional hardware to purchase, it’s really quite a bargain. Trying to get this level of detail from your swing anywhere else would probably cost you hundreds for a professional swing analysis session in a simulator.
For those of you who are truly budget-conscious, the app publishers also offer a lite version with a few stripped down features for around $4.99.
GolfNow: Now that you have your swing dialed in and your GPS and scoring apps ready to go, the only thing left to do is book a tee time. That’s where the GolfNow app comes in. GolfNow allows golfers to search courses and book tee times right from their smartphone and tablet. Founded way back in 2001 (seemingly forever ago in internet-years), this software has grown to more than 5,000 courses worldwide and offers daily discounts at most of your favorite local courses. Although it is important to note that not all courses will show up come up. Only the ones that have a partnership agreement with GolfNow are available on the app. You can also take advantage of GolfNow system discounts by booking tee times directly through our website.
Regardless, this free app is a great tool to have around when you want to search for and book a tee time on the go. We can’t tell you how many of our own tee times have been booked using this app while standing around the BBQ making plans for the weekend.
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed our list of our top 5 golf apps. With so many new apps hitting the market every day we’re sure even bigger and better options are already well on there way. Regardless, we want to hear about some of your favorite golf apps. Leave us a comment below or Tweet us at @Golficity. Our smartphones are standing by!
