TRENDING: WHOOP Data Shows Strain from Clutch Moments
Although Justin Thomas has locked down the 2021 THE PLAYERS Championship, there’s still a lot to unpack from the win, including his WHOOP bio-data from Sunday’s final round.
Indeed, JT legitimately battled his way through the field throughout the tournament, with his peak strain (unsurprisingly) coming on Sunday, when his WHOOP strain hit 16.4 (score out of 21) after hovering in the 13-14 range over the previous three days. WHOOP’s strain calculation is derived from a person’s elevated heart rate and quantifies things beyond physical exertion, like the stress and intensity of a pressure-packed final round of golf.
Thomas’ climactic Sunday round was not short on heart-pumping moments. During his eagle putt on the 11th hole, Thomas’ heart rate peaked at 125 beats per minute as he watched the ball drop into the hole and celebrated.

But that wasn’t even his highest heart rate. Indeed, Thomas’ heart rate eclipse 138 BPM following the tee shot at 18 while he watched his ball come precariously close to running out into the water.

JT has been a big advocate of WHOOP, and the correlation between his performance and WHOOP metrics cannot be ignored.
To explain, on the first day of THE PLAYERS, Thomas’ recovery was in the yellow at 62 and he only managed to shoot a 1-under-par 71. For Day 2, Thomas showed up with a 77% recovery score (green) and, after sitting at 1-over-par through the first 9 holes and facing the possibility of missing the cut, Thomas buckled down and shot 3-under on the back 9 to end the day 2-below-par after a second straight 71—7 strokes off the lead.
Saturday, Thomas awoke with an 84% recovery, his best of the tournament, which helped him fire off his best round (8-under 64), finishing the day at -10.
On Sunday, Thomas’ recovery was green for the third day in a row at 77%. Part of what allowed his body to maintain such favorable recovery despite high levels of strain was exceptionally good-quality sleep. Thomas got 3+ hours of restorative REM sleep each night of the tournament (people generally spend roughly 20-25% of their time asleep in REM).
While we can all benefit from more sleep, WHOOP allows users to quantify recovery, stress, training intensity, and many other aspects of life to help unlock their potential. Additionally, WHOOP helps users keep themselves accountable by tracking good (and bad) behaviors that help advance your performance and overall well-being.
