Golf Dog Helps Find Balls On Local Course

No matter how long you’ve played golf, there have been several occasions where you’ll shank a ball into the woods without any way of finding it. Well, one man may have the solution to your problems.

In Ogden, Utah, Arnie Smith has a golden lab named Gabby that he takes for walks at the local golf course. But Gabby doesn’t just go for the walk, she’s also on a mission. Her mission when she goes out is to find golf balls that have been lost in the brush. Whenever she comes upon a spot by the woods, Smith will allow her to go search for balls, giving her a treat for every one that she finds.

Labs are hunting dogs by trade so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Gabby is able to dive in and find balls that could have been there for years. Smith discovered that Gabby had this talent when he decided one day to throw a few balls into the woods and see if she would find them. Not only did Gabby bring back every ball, she would dive in looking for more.

Now Arnie takes Gabby to the course often just to see how many balls she can find. Sometimes golfers will come down the fairway and be amazed by the dog’s ability to fetch the balls out of the brush. In all, Smith believes that Gabby has probably found a few thousand golf balls since he has been taking her there.

Now, this seems like a great way to find the balls, sell them back, and make a nice bit of pocket change. Smith is too humble for that, however. Instead of selling the balls, Smith takes them to his barber shop whenever he’s getting a haircut and fills up a bucket full of balls. The best part is, anyone can come on by and take them to be hit into the woods again.

For all of the people out there who dive into lakes and search the treelines for balls, bringing along your best buddy may help out with the cause. So not only will you be able to find balls for yourself, you’ll be able to create an even greater bond with your pet as Smith and Gabby have.
