REVIEW: Nike Air Max Plus G Golf Shoe

For about two-and-a-half years, I have done my research to find the best and most comfortable golf shoes out there each year in an effort to eliminate any complaints about foot or leg pain after a tiresome round out on the course.

The search might truly be over, at least for now, because Nike has truly established itself as a contender in this specific category with the recent release of the Air Max Plus G. It was a shoe I was reluctant to try because of its look, which is not necessarily my style. However, it is easily the most comfortable shoe I’ve had on the course in years.

Supreme Comfort

Perhaps the most comfortable golf shoe I have ever worn, the Nike Air Max Plus G is not your typical footwear for the links. It features a throwback style that is not typical to most offerings that the bigger OEMs are using to snap up customers in an increasingly competitive market.

Nike describes the shoe as a “street legend,” and that’s exactly what it is. I can remember being in 9th or 10th grade and having my cousins, who were several years older than me, buy these in multiple pairs to match various outfits. When I saw Nike offering them as a golf shoe, I will admit I was slightly confused.

However, in the name of trying to get people the information and ratings they need before dropping $185 on a pair of shoes, I figured I would give them a shot.

The comfort mostly comes from the fit. I am usually slightly too wide for a Nike shoe, and it requires me to half-size up. I did the same here and opted for a 10.5 instead of my usual 10.

I have been walking a lot of rounds this year, as I recently bought a walking membership at a local golf course.

These have been my choice every single round (at least if I’m not testing out another shoe). While other footwear options have left me with sore feet, blisters, and even some shin splints, the Air Max Plus G has not left me with any residual pain after a round.

I believe it’s the Max Air unit in the heel:

“Max Air in the heel gives you support.”

It has handled hills, uneven lies, and everything in between. I truly have zero complaints about these in terms of comfort.

Traction and Stability

The sole of the shoe is fitted with rubber lugs that are made with wet traction rubber, which helps provide grip.

I have been impressed with the sole and its performance, especially considering I have been less than confident in shoes that do not have traditional spikes.

I have used these in both damp and dry conditions. The early morning rounds are usually a little damp from dew or rain overnight, but I have had no issues with slipping or stability.

Fit and Feel

As mentioned previously, try half-sizing up with these. A 10 is a better fit for me in shoes like the Sun Day Red Pioneer Cypress and FootJoy Traditions. 10.5 in Nikes is generally a better fit than a 10.

The Air Max Plus G has plenty of padding and insulation to keep your foot comfortable, and the internal cage Nike implemented on these keeps your foot from moving around too much, which is usually what causes blisters.

Along with the shifting of your foot, moisture can also impede a good experience for your foot. This shoe eliminates both:

What’s truly impressive about the Air Max G is its quality and its security. Your foot feels hugged by the shoe and not in a bad way. The secure feeling you will feel as you lace in is one that many other shoes simply do not offer.

It’s roomy but snug in the best way.

Final Thoughts

My biggest caveat with this shoe was its appearance, as I truly enjoy wearing something dressy on the course.

However, I have really enjoyed wearing it and I have opened up a new respect for shoes that have a more athletic look than a dressy one. These shoes are truly functional and perfect for the course in more ways than one.

If you’re considering walking a round, go with something that is less dressy and more functional. Your feet will thank you later.
