WOW: Augusta Looks Like It’s Getting A Makeover
It’s amazing to think about how technology gives us the opportunity to see and analyze so many things that we otherwise wouldn’t. Take for example, the new uncovered photos from Augusta National found on the web.
We’ve all seen amazing pictures of Augusta throughout the years however, no one has seen anything like what Twitter user Lou Stagner showed the world this week. Stagner had been looking at some Google Earth photos of Augusta and noticed that the 12th and 13th holes are now brown with black bunkers as it appears the course is going through some changes.
This is so cool looking!
Just went on google earth to look up something at Augusta.
It appears the google satellites captured Augusta in the middle of some renovations.

The most interesting part of the pictures was the work that appears to be going on behind the 13th tee. From the picture, you might see what appears to be a new service road being built or maybe you see something else… To Twitter and golf experts, it looks like the course could be constructing a new tee box that’s further back for the 13th.
While you might think this vision is a long shot since they could be building anything, there have been clues that the 13th was due for a distance increase. Scott Michaux, a former correspondent for the Augusta Chronicle, pointed out that there’s a lot of room between that service road and the current tee box and indicated that groundwork has already been laid to increase the distance of the hole. Augusta Chairman Fred Ridley has also hinted at this for a few years.
Note that they’ve left A LOT of room for that maintenance road to curve behind 13 tee. Rather ominous. pic.twitter.com/81bAdx0QG9

“There’s a great quote from Bobby Jones dealing specifically with the 13th hole, which has been lengthened over time,” Ridley said in 2018. “He said that the decision to go for the green in two should be a momentous one. And I would have to say that our observations of these great players hitting middle and even short irons into that hole is not a momentous decision.” Ridley also added that the hole doesn’t play as designed anymore in a press conference in 2019.
The photos that everyone is looking at are actually from September so there’s a possibility that more work has been done since then which could provide more evidence if the 13th has a new tee box. Until updated pictures are found, we unfortunately won’t know what’s going on with the famous 13th until players tee off in April.
