CRAZY: Golf Pro Kicked Off Course Over His Socks
The game of golf seems to be getting younger and more modern as the years go on, and society continues to change. But there are still some old golf norms that exist and they are driving some people crazy.
One of the more common, conservative rules that golfers seem to run into is that it is only acceptable to wear white socks. This isn’t the case at every course you go to, in fact, I personally have never run into this issue, but there are still a few courses that cling to this old rule. One of those clubs is apparently one of the top golf courses in Sydney, Australia.
That’s exactly where former pro Ewan Porter came face to face with this archaic rule…
Visited a premier Sydney golf club today. Was told I wouldn’t be able to play wearing black socks with black shoes and I needed to buy white club socks. Leaving this open for discussion, but I said out of principle, I’d prefer not to play than bow to archaic rules.

Porter did end up leaving the course after refusing to buy the white club socks, but even crazier in my mind, is that the course has now banned him permanently for going public with his critique. It does seem incredibly petty for a course to not only refuse to let someone play because of their socks, but then ban them for complaining. But on the flip side, Porter probably should have known the rules and just followed them to avoid conflict.
There’s no doubt that the sock rule is incredibly archaic and dumb, but when you’re playing on someone else’s course, you have to abide by the rules. Eventually, this rule will probably go away, but not before a lot of controversies. Even with golf becoming more of a modern game, there will always be traditionalists that are willing to argue the point until they’re blue in the face. And that goes for other wardrobe rules as well, just ask Tyrell Hatton, who’s been getting slammed for weeks now because he has been wearing a hoodie in his events.

Overall, it seems like the higher-ups in the golf world are a lot more receptive to relaxed clothing rules with moves to allow shorts in practice rounds, for example. Hopefully, as those moves continue to happen, we will eventually be rid of all the historic rules that are putting a damper on an evolving game.
