Our Eye-Opening Titleist Golf Ball Fitting

Before filming this video we had no idea how much knowledge and technology went into a golf ball fitting. But, in one eye-opening afternoon we learned how much playing the right ball for your unique swing can help maximize your personal performance.

To call this experience “eye-opening” is not just click-bait…in fact, it might be an understatement.

Recently Mike and I had the opportunity to meet up with Michael Rich, Taylor Woods, and the Titleist golf ball fitting team at TPC River Highlands for an incredibly enlightening experience. 

We had been fit for golf clubs before and that has paid dividends for our game, which begged the question…what about the golf ball? After all, as Michael says in the video, the golf ball is the only piece of golf equipment that remains the same on every shot!  

Think about it…you use different clubs for different situations, but the ball needs to perform well no matter if it’s a drive, pitch, putt, or chip. So finding the ball that performs best for you seems like a no-brainer right?

What we found going through this fitting is that golf balls perform differently depending on the golfer who’s striking it. Sounds like common sense when you hear it but let that sink in for a minute…

When you think about it, we use robots to test golf balls in large sample sizes, and those tests are great for certain things, but we’re not robots…we’re humans and we all swing the club a little differently—if I’m being honest, I kind of wish my swing was as pure as what the robot can produce but that’s just not in the cards for me right now.

Anyway, since every golfer is unique the way the ball performs with an individual’s swing is going to vary, and that’s why I’m finding that it’s so important to experiment, and test different golf balls to see which plays best for you. 

The ball that is longest or attacks the green best for you, might not be the best option for your buddy, and vice versa.  So the good news is that a proper golf ball fitting will help shed light on the golf ball that maximizes your own unique and individual performance though a series of empirical (Trackman data) and subjective (on-course demo) tests.

Essentially what I’m saying is that I truly believe that golf ball fittings, like the one we experienced, are going to very much become the norm for golfers in the near future. As golf ball technology enters new heights, and as golfers continue to take their equipment choices more and more seriously (just look at how popular golf club fittings have become lately!) it is becoming clear to me that golf ball fittings for every golfer are where we’re headed.

And that’s a good thing!

A good golf ball fitting provides two things that can benefit every golfer’s game…one is a deep knowledge about your game, the equipment you’re using, etc., and the other is confidence. And when push comes to shove, what golfer doesn’t want to stand over a golf shot with confidence knowing that he or she has the best performing equipment for his or her game!

The good news is that is exactly what you get from a good ball fitting. Or at least I did…and I hope you do too.
