If you’ve been an active golf fan in the last decade, you’ll remember Kaymer’s name from winning both the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 and 2010 respectively. He’s a former world number one golfer and with that pedigree, it looked as though he was going to become a young star of the game. But injuries and poor play have derailed much of Kaymer’s career since, as he only sits at the No. 128 spot now.

Kaymer isn’t nearly as active or competitive as he was 6 years ago, but reliving those major championship wins really makes you remember how dominant and talented of a golfer really is. And apparently, rekindling those memories also reminds Kaymer himself, as he told media after the first round of the PGA Championship that he got himself ready for the event by watching highlights of his two major wins.

When asked why he decided to watch highlights of himself, he said it was all about mentality. “I like to go back to those moments,” he said. “I know you shouldn’t live in the past, but if the past can help you in the present moment, I’ll take it,” Further, Kaymer said he was “trying to get some kind of positivity in my game because there hasn’t been much recently because of my play.”

It may come off as a little odd that someone would hype themself up for an event by watching their own highlights but sometimes you need a reminder of how good you can be. And it seems to be working for Kaymer. After the first round of the PGA Championship, Kaymer is sitting -4, only one shot back of the lead. And that’s after only playing one other event since the restart, the Barracuda Championship this past week, and missing the cut.

Nobody expected Kaymer to factor into this week’s major but after round one, he’s right at the top. And if he ends up winning his third major this week, we all might want to start making our own hype videos to watch before heading to the course.
